Analyze the ethical dimensions of communication and form judgments and practices based on evidence and values.

As a group project in Comm 183: Communications, Development, and Social Change, we researched and evaluated Levi Strauss & Co's Corporate Social Responsibility through the lens of concepts from assigned readings throughout the quarter. Through critically analyzing Levi’s sustainability initiatives, along with diversity, equity, and inclusion models, we were able to make informed judgments on the strength and validity of Levi’s Corporate Social Responsibility. Ethics play a huge part in what commitment companies put into sustainability, their goals, and the resources they offer. As evidence, we cross-referenced readings and concepts from the class with Levi’s CSR policies in order to evaluate how effective their initiatives are for the greater well-being of society.

Comm 183 explores how global poverty and social change are affected by communication content and technology, as both influence the policies and practices that impact the disenfranchised throughout the global North and South. A prime focus of this course was to utilize theoretical concepts in order to evaluate the reasoning behind the successes and failures of new communication technologies within different groups of people.

I chose this topic because I am an avid fan of Levi Strauss & Co.’s product, company mission, and initiatives to alleviate certain disadvantaged groups in society. As a fan of the brand, I wanted to evaluate their work in creating a more just and inclusive atmosphere for all communities, not just for marketing purposes. It was interesting to be able to use class concepts to pick apart the different ways Levi attempts to be diverse, inclusive, and sustainable. It speaks to the greater theme in these large corporations’ part in determining the dynamics between those in power and those who are affected by these media streams.

This artifact is an important representation of my mastery of PLO 4, as I was able to analyze the ethical dimensions of Levi and Strauss’ media campaigns and workplace culture initiatives and form judgments on whether it is sincere and effective using evidence and values from our class and referenced readings.
